Is Your Approach To Family Ministry Working? Print E-mail

I've been asked to take on the role of "Family Ministry Coordinator" for our church. As I prepare for this role I ask myself the following questions:

  • Is sending a fun card or activity page home, for parents to do with their kids, really working? Are parents committing themselves "wholeheartedly" to God's commands and repeating them to their children/youth day in and day out (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)?
  • What about offering "Family Fun Nights" that bring families together, is that the most effective way to enhance their spiritual parenting skills?
  • Or is it that one "Big Family Friendly Event" that really helps teach parents how to raise up their children/youth in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6)?

My conclusion is that none of the above attempts in establishing a healthy family ministry are as effective as we would like them to be.

Comfortable Discontent Print E-mail

discontent2Feeling discontent, in the safety of your comfort zone? That's how I felt after meeting with a dear friend the last week of 2011. It left me refreshed yet discontent. It's been a very long time since I've been sharpened like that and it revealed just how dull I'd allowed myself to become (Proverbs 27:17). I came to the realization that I'm comfortable… but not content. That's what happens when you begin to follow God's plan halfheartedly instead of with your whole heart, mind, strength (Mark 12:30). Half of your heart wants to stay safe, wrapped in your own little comfort zone.

Why do we do this? For me there are many reasons like fear, hurt, past experiences where I gave it my all, poured my heart and soul into something… someone… and it did not work out the way I thought it would. In some situations it became a nightmare I would rather not live through again. So I seek comfort and safety.

Teaching Resources Makeover Print E-mail

How old is your curriculum? Does it engage your kids?

The curriculum you choose is your most important resource. It is part of the foundation that leads to success or failure. Curriculum that is outdated or written from an old school mentality, may not relate to the environments today's kids are familiar with and engaged in on a daily basis. Teaching an outdated curriculum would be like asking kids to relate to old cartoons you grew up with or a Mr. Rogers show. There is nothing wrong with either but they were created using the most up to date methods during that time. The methods used to engaged kids have advanced, just spend about an hour watching today's cartoons or the Disney channel if you don't believe me.
